I started Wild Deuce Apparel based on two things I love: hoodies and poker!

I’ve been playing poker recreationally since I was eighteen, from home games to casinos and everything in between. Recently, I've started participating in the World Series of Poker sharing every poker player's dream of winning a WSOP ring.

As for hoodies, they are a staple in my closet and you'll rarely catch me without one on, even during warmer months. It's now turned into a collection and I try to pick one up whenever I travel to a new place (which was quite the challenge when visiting Mykonos in the middle of summer).

 

Where Hoodie meets Poker

Now, if you have ever visited a casino, you know they are notoriously cold (can't gamble if we're warm and sleepy). And so the hoodie has become a common item seen in casinos and poker rooms around the world, which is very convenient for someone like me. And while hoodies may have originally been used solely for warmth, they have also since become a tool for trying to disguise poker tells!

While I loved to see the organic intersection of hoodies and poker, I saw the opportunity to create a real synergy between the two. Not just hoodies being worn BY poker players, but hoodies being made FOR poker players, with designs and styles inspired by the game itself. This led me to create Wild Deuce Apparel.

Why Wild Deuce?

I wanted a name that embodied poker with subtle wit. When I first started playing poker, many of the games we played incorporated wild cards (e.g. “Baseball”, “Kings and Little Ones”, “Follow the Queen”, and a game we fondly called “Super Guts”). The use of "Wild" is my personal tribute to these games that fostered my love for poker.

There are multiple reasons I chose the word "Deuce". In poker, twos are commonly referred to as deuces. As the lowest card in the deck (in most poker games) the two can be seen as the underdog. And there’s nothing sweeter in Texas Hold’em (my game of choice) than raking in a big pot when your pocket deuces hit a sneaky set on the flop. And with that, the WILD DEUCE brand was born.

But Why a Duck as the Logo?

But wait, there’s more! Bonus points for anyone who figured out why I chose a duck to be the face of the brand.

When thinking about a logo, I looked to the name of the brand for inspiration. In poker, a pair of twos (or deuces) is also known as ducks because of the shape of the number ‘2’. I then had that ‘aha’ moment and realized a duck was the obvious choice.

 

So Why Wear Wild Deuce?

In 7th grade, I was required to write an essay based on the following quote from William Shakespeare's Hamlet:

For the apparel oft proclaims the man

I won’t bore you with my essay, but the phrase essentially boils down to ‘you are what you wear’. I obviously can’t guarantee that you’ll win wearing WILD DEUCE clothing, but I can guarantee that you'll look great. All you need is a chip, a chair, and a Wild Deuce hoodie.
